Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has invited moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and other separatist leaders to visit the country.

Zardari extended the invitation to Mirwaiz during his meeting with him on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session on Friday evening, the Hurriyat spokesman said.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US Sherry Rehman were also present during the meeting.

“President Zardari during the meeting with Mirwaiz reiterated Pakistan’s principled stand to continue extending all political, moral and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri brethren, who have rendered countless sacrifices for upholding their dignity and freedom,” the spokesman said.

“Zardari reiterated his call to the international community to focus its attention towards the plight of Kashmiri people who have been waging a legitimate struggle for their right to self-determination over six decades despite suffering huge losses and massive human rights violations,” he added.

The Hurriyat spokesman said that Zardari “fully endorsed the view that without the participation of the Kashmiri leadership in the dialogue process India and Pakistan cannot address the Kashmir problem”.

“On this occasion the Zardari repeated the invitation of the Pakistani government to Hurriyat chairman and his other colleagues to visit the country and meet and exchange views with the ruling and opposition parties.”

The spokesman said that Mirwaiz thanked Zardari for “endorsing the right of self determination of people of Jammu and Kashmir.”

Mirwaiz also thanked President Zardari for his country’s “continuous moral diplomatic and political support to the people of Jammu and Kashmir for achieving this right during his speech in UN General Assembly”.

In his UN General Assembly speech Zardari had said, “Kashmir remains a symbol of failures, rather than strengths of the UN system.”
